Gabby Zakuani Returns

When Gloria Giffords received a phone call from her son-in-law Mark Kelly to say her daughter had been shot, the 73-year-old jumped in her car and was the first one at the hospital bedside of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. The 25-year-old has continued to play during that time with the help of pain-killing injections to a broken toe."I have literally not trained since the beginning of August," the centre-half told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire."It just feels good to be able to put weight on to my foot without any sort of injection."Zakuani initially broke his toe against Stevenage on 9 August but, after a three-week lay-off, he has started all of Posh's last 12 games while carrying the injury, although he was unable to train between matches and has only just started to run on a treadmill.

"We're hoping we can step it up to ball work on Thursday or Friday," he explained."At the moment it's just been running on the treadmill. Until now I hadn't even been able to walk on the treadmill in between games."It's a good thing I can actually get a full running session to get that running action and to get weight on my foot, which is great."And Zakuani is pleased he will no longer have to use pain-killing injections to get through games."It does wear out really early in games," he said. "There's been a few times where it's worn off in the warm-up."Knowing that the gaffer would rather play me injured means a lot."
