Giants Eagles

The Fifth Down provided live updates and analysis during the Giants’ 17-10 loss to the Eagles on Sunday night, while tracking the probability of a win throughout the game. A quick review for those unfamiliar with the metric from Advanced NFL Stats: Win probability measures just that — the probability that each team will win the game at any moment. The Philadelphia Eagles sent the rival New York Giants to a second straight loss even without Michael Vick at quarterback, while the Green Bay Packers won to improve to 10-0 and match the best start in team history.

The Eagles ended a two-game National Football League losing streak by beating the Giants 17-10 last night at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Backup quarterback Vince Young threw two touchdown passes in place of the injured Vick, including an 8-yard score to Riley Cooper with 2:45 left that snapped a 10-10 tie.

Philadelphia improved to 4-6 while dropping the Giants to 6-4 and into a tie with the Dallas Cowboys atop the National Football Conference’s East Division. Eli Manning fumbled at the Eagles’ 21-yard line with 1:17 remaining for the Giants.

“That is the biggest disappointment that we have had around here in a long time,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said at a news conference. “It was a very poor performance.”

The Packers beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35-26 yesterday behind three touchdown passes from Aaron Rodgers, two of which were caught by Jordy Nelson, including one with 3:01 remaining after the Buccaneers had pulled within 28-26 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

John Kuhn and defensive tackle B.J. Raji added rushing touchdowns for the Super Bowl-champion Packers, who previously started 10-0 on the way to winning NFL titles in 1929 and 1962.

First Goal

“When you get to 10 wins, you can start forecasting out to your goals and our first goal is to win the division,” said Packers coach Mike McCarthy, whose team leads the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears by three games in the NFC North Division.

The Packers visit the Lions on Nov. 24, the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S.

The Lions rallied past the Carolina Panthers 49-35 as Matthew Stafford threw five touchdown passes. The Lions (7-3) overcame a 24-7 second-quarter deficit, becoming the first team in NFL history to win three games in a season after trailing by 17 or more points.

“We can get as hot as anybody in the league,” said Lions coach Jim Schwartz, whose team recovered after turning the ball over on its first three possessions and allowing a 101-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Although the Bears improved to 7-3 with a 31-20 victory over the San Diego Chargers, Chicago’s fifth straight win may have come at a price. Quarterback Jay Cutler, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, will miss the rest of the regular season after breaking the thumb on his throwing hand, ESPN reported.

49ers Win

The San Francisco 49ers, who have the NFL’s second-best record behind the Packers, racked up their eighth consecutive win by beating the Arizona Cardinals 23-7. Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes and the 49ers’ defense forced five turnovers, including three interceptions of the Cardinals’ John Skelton.

The Cowboys beat the Washington Redskins 27-24 on a 39-yard field goal in overtime by Dan Bailey. The Cowboys won their third straight game to tie the Giants for first place in the NFC East while the Redskins (3-7) have lost six in a row for the first time since 1998.

The Atlanta Falcons defeated the Tennessee Titans 23-17 to rebound from last week’s overtime loss to New Orleans, while the Baltimore Ravens beat the Cincinnati Bengals 31-24 to tie Pittsburgh for first place in the American Football Conference’s North Division.

In other NFL Week 11 action, it was Seattle 24, St. Louis 7; Oakland 27, Minnesota 21; Miami 35, Buffalo 8; and Cleveland 14, Jacksonville 10. The Denver Broncos beat the New York Jets 17-13 in the Thursday night NFL game.

The Kansas City Chiefs visit the New England Patriots tonight. The Pittsburgh Steelers, Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts are off this week.

Giants-Eagles

The Eagles opened a 10-0 second-quarter lead against the Giants as Alex Henery kicked a 33-yard field goal and Young threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to former Giant Steve Smith.

New York’s only points over the first three quarters came on a 48-yard field goal by Lawrence Tynes on the final play of the first half. Manning pulled the Giants within 14-10 with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Victor Cruz with 11:36 and got the ball back again after Young’s go-ahead scoring pass to Cooper.

Manning has led the Giants to five fourth-quarter comebacks this season, yet his final drive came up short last night when he fumbled after a hit by Jason Babin.

The Giants lost their previous game 27-20 in San Francisco when Manning had a fourth-down pass batted down at the 49ers’ 10-yard line with 37 seconds left.

“We can’t keep waiting until the fourth quarter to start playing,” Manning said at a news conference. “You never know when that weird play is going to happen, a fumble or last week a tipped ball, you can’t always account for those things.”
