Jay Cutler Injury

The quarterbacks didn’t want to make it into their duel but that’s what Sunday’s meeting at Soldier Field came down to — Jay Cutler and Philip Rivers squaring off in a showdown of gunslingers. The Chicago Bears defeated the San Diego Chargers on Sunday afternoon, but their situation going forward looks quite a bit more bleak. Starting quarterback Jay Cutler suffered a broken thumb on his throwing hand, an injury that could force him to miss a few games for the Bears.

Cutler did not miss any time in the Bears 31-20 victory, but the news afterward is that Cutler could be out "for awhile," according to the Chicago Tribune's Vaughn McClure. Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that there fears that the injury could end his season, though further tests are pending.

Cutler hasn't been an outstanding quarterback this season, but he has led his team to a solid 7-3 record while playing in the ultra-competitive NFC North division. The veteran has completed 164 of his 283 attempts thus far this season, throwing for 2,033 yards and 11 touchdowns compared to six interceptions.

Cutler's backups on the Bears depth chart are Caleb Hanie and Nathan Enderle. If the reports are true, it would not be surprising to see Chicago look at the possibility of signing a more veteran quarterback.
