UC Davis Chancellor Announces

Davis announced it is launching an investigation after a disturbing videotape surfaced showing a police officer in riot gear heavily pepper-spraying a group of student protesters who were seated on the ground on campus. After the Aggies held off Sacramento State to earn a 23-19 victory at Hornet Stadium on Saturday in the 58th edition of the Causeway Classic, UC Davis coach Bob Biggs preferred to look ahead rather than focus on the past.

"We're not happy with four wins obviously and there was some games on (the schedule) that certainly if we would have played a little bit better, probably on the offensive side, we would have won three or four more games," Biggs said. "But what's past is past and we've learned from it and we're a young football team."UC Davis redshirt freshman running back Colton Silveria took over the game, running for 170 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. He said it was the best game he has ever had as a running back, but gave the credit to his offensive line.

"They were blocking really, really well and all I can do is run behind them," he said.Silveria blew past the line and put the game on ice with about three minutes left when he broke away for a 66-yard run to the Sacramento State 11-yard line and stayed in bounds."I saw two guys kind of had an angle on me and I was just trying to get down the field as fast as I could," he said. "I was just thinking, 'run.'"

After Sean Kelley kicked a 23-yard field goal to put the Aggies up 23-13, the Hornets only had 1:22 left in the game to try and score twice. With the game clock at zero, Sacramento State quarterback Garrett Safron ran 30 yards to give the Hornets their first offensive

TD. The score was tightened, but the Hornets were literally out of time.

Saffron finished the day with 93 yards rushing, but only completed 11 of 31 passes for 155 yards. The first Hornets touchdown of the game came on a fumble recovery by defensive lineman Ben Cowger. UC Davis quarterback Randy Wright avoided pressure and ran into the end zone, but he couldn't avoid Cowger. The lineman hit Wright, forced the fumble and recovered it to give Sacramento State a 10-3 lead early in the second quarter.

"Basically, I just had the adrenaline going and I was just real focused," Cowger said. "I don't really remember much about it, all I know is I was supposed to do my job, and that's to go to the outside, and as the crease opened up I was just in the right place at the right time."At that point, it looked like the two kickers would be the only ones scoring on offense. Both kickers struggled all season, with Sean Kelley of the Aggies connecting on six of 12 field goals coming into the game and Jason Diniz of the Hornets only hitting one of his six tries.

"I was happy in some ways, now that the game's over with, that (Diniz) actually made them because that would have been a tough offseason for him, as well as our kicker," Biggs said. "Sean came through for us with three field goals today and he's had, by his standards, a subpar season."Diniz was two for two and Kelley was three for three in field-goal attempts.Sacramento State coach Marshall Sperbeck said the Agies ground game did in the Hornets in the end."(Silveria) ran hard, he did a nice job, and I think their O-line played well and I give the credit to them for stepping up to the challenge," he said. Both teams wrap up their seasons with 4-7 records. Sperbeck wasn't ready to focus on the future after the game like Biggs."I really haven't looked ahead," he said. "This one has been tough and we have some things that we need to take care of in the offseason both with recruiting and in house."Biggs said the team is young and he is excited about the future."We have the right attitude (and) great chemistry," he said. "We only graduated 14 seniors so we don't have that many scholarships to give, I think we have 11 to potentially give next year. ... That says that maybe we've done a good job in the past with our recruiting."
